In wake of the Kentucky Wildcat’s triumphant climb to the 2,000 win column, a recent article on BleacherReport.com posed the question Which is the Greatest College Basketball Program of All Time? Is this really a debate? Seriously? They argue that Kentucky is winning now, while UCLA is mostly living off its heyday. I guess those three consecutive Final Fours from 2006, 2007, and 2008 don’t mean anything.
A poll on the site has Kentucky leading at 69.6%, UCLA in second with 21.7%, Indiana at 4.3%, North Carolina with 0%, and “Someone Else” with 4.3% which I’m assuming is some small mid major as a joke. Granted, this poll only had 23 votes (including myself), it’s a wonder this is even an argument.
I’m not disputing the fact that 2,000 wins is an easy feat (which North Carolina will achieve this season as well), but the real number we should be concerned with is championships. UCLA leads the college basketball world with 11 banners (Kentucky is #2 with 7), and 104 overall NCAA team championships, more than any other university. Need further convincing? UCLA has put more players in the NBA than any other school. End of discussion.
